If you are looking to do a little sightseeing outside of Lake Tahoe during your South Lake Tahoe vacation, Virginia City is a great place to check out. It is located northeast of Carson City and would take approximately and hour and a half to get there, but well worth the drive! It was established in the mid-1800’s during the gold rush and was originally a mining town. Built in the “Old West” days, not much has changed over the years so you will get a feeling of being transported back in time! There are a number of Old West saloons (including the famous “Bucket of Blood Saloon”), restaurants, gift shops, mine tours and museums. Virginia City is also appropriate for all ages, making it a great day destination for the whole family; they have some great activities for kids. I have also heard their cemetery is quite incredible to see, although I haven’t seen it personally.
